Not involving an accident, unless your being startled caused it.

I was driving to the south of town on wednesday and raised my window because it was chilly, have automatic windows so just pressed the lever up and kept on. Suddenly heard a snap and the window slammed down into my door. Scared the shit out of me.

The cable that draws the window up/down on the window regulator snapped.

Cold ride home, no jacket at 10PM.

Working on fixing it right now. You can see the crumbled ancient plastic that fell out of it, lol.

Anyone else have any cool story bros?

In my old S10 a ball joint suddenly failed. Attention getting to say the least.

Back when I was a park ranger I got to drive a variety of old beater trucks. I was driving an old Chevy crew cab back to the maintenance station by myself one day when I leaned back and promptly fell into the backseat as the front bench collapsed entirely.

Had a transmission eat itself alive while on the highway. That was frightening. The entire housing was shredded.

Little bit. Thank God I wasn't on the highway. The truck just slammed down and ground up the wheel before I could stop.

I'm fine so, shit happens I guess.

Driving down the freeway, 75mph or so when the rear passenger door glass shatters OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE

No idea how, or why, or what, or even whom but fuck did that give us a start

That is crazy. I can't think of anything that would hit the rear window like that on accident lol

Nothing that really scared me while driving, just afterwards when I thought about it.

Back when I first had my G1 (learner's permit, have to drive with someone who has had their full G for 5 years), my stepdad and I were going to grab food from a place near the cottage we were renting. As I was driving along at about 80 km/h, I started smelling something, and noticed the car was pulling. My stepdad told me to keep driving, since we were only a few minutes away from our destination.

Well, when we got there, there was a lot of smoke billowing out from the rear right wheel. Turns out that the brake had become locked. We limped it back to the cottage, and got it towed back to the city the next day.

Thing is, I felt like it was my fault: I partially left the parking brake on for the first few feet before removing it. I thought that I had fucked up and broken the car. The whole fear of blame scared the shit out of me.

However, I was never blamed for it, so I guess it worked out in the end?

glass probably had air pockets in it. Happened to my grandpa in his (then) new 70 challenger. Diving along and the passenger door glass just explodes

cruising down the highway at 65 and had the distributor go out. That was interesting.

my first car was a 1968 Mustang. I bought it when I turned 16 in 1990. I was driving home from high school one day on a busy two laned highway full of logging trucks doing 80. I go to shoot my gap to make a left to the road that lead to my house and the brake and clutch petal hit the floor. The bracket that held them wore through. I about pooed myself. Matched revs, got it into second and made it home.

I was driving along and hit the brakes going into a corner and my car just fucking snapped and turned 180deg and I slid off track into a gravel trap.... then I saw white smoke billowing under the hood

It was my lower radiator hose that had slipped off (clamp was loose) the radiator, and let antifreeze all over my tires... Antifreeze is like ice so I just lost control..........

That was at Turn 1 at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course

Not a car one, but I once had the brakes fail on my mountain bike while heading steeply downhill towards a t-junction with a dual-carriageway.

Right about here, I reckon. Steeper than it looks, but I'm mainly posting it because, hey, Bentley. (Look right.)

When my alternator started to die, it would cut the power steering out on me. One time the whole car just turned off. From the first time it gave me problems to when it was completely dead took about a year, and the car was stored over winter.

Happened at Road America, while autocrossing, which is when the car turned off, and while running Tail of the Dragon.

The day it completely died also happened at Road America, a year after the initial problems showed up. While on track it kicked on my ABS, when I was *not on the brakes*. That was incredibly scary. Luckily I was just before track out, so pulled off safely.

I had an AC hose fail while I was driving down the road. A pop, hiss and what I assumed to be steam streaming out of the hood. Scared the crap out of me, but in the grand scheme of things, probably the best possible failure given the symptoms.

It was a dark and stormy night (no, really, it was), and I was driving my Rover SD1 down a twisty country road when the brakes failed completely – no mushy pedal warning signs beforehand, just straight to the floor. Aside from the immediate terror of losing brakes on a twisty, downhill stretch, there was no cell service, and nobody else for miles around.

I ended up limping it along using engine braking and the handbrake, which was a buttock-clenching experience in its own right, until I found a tiny little bar, right in the middle of nowhere. Dressed in skinny jeans and a blazer, I looked completely out of place amongst the half-dozen crusty old farmers, but they welcomed me in, let me call for a tow, and bought me drinks until the tow truck arrived. All in all, it was a pretty good time.

Went to walmart to get a new bike. After checking out, I loaded the bike into the back of the minivan I was driving at the time. I get in and start the van. I was not even out of my parking spot and I hear a loud POP that scared me half to death. Still shaking I turn around to see the blown out tire on my bike, and quickly realize that was what had caused me to nearly soil myself. The guy that filled the tires didnt take into account the temperature difference between the air conditioned store and blistering outside temps. They made good and replace the tire & tube, but not before it gave me quite the scare.

Had a tire blow out twice. Not fun. Also had a loud pop that nearly made me go deaf. Still don't know what it was.

I inherited a 98 Ram from my Dad many years back that Code Brown'd me twice in one day.

On my way home from work one day the metal brake line for the rear ruptured (rusty) in traffic. My foot went close to the floor and I locked the fronts, scaring everyone around me.

Well, still have the Parking brake and the fronts. I hit the back roads and started limping the rest of the way home. Not even close to a good idea!

After cresting a hill for the final stretch the metal line for the front brakes ruptured (rusty) on the down stroke. I slammed the shifter into first (automatic), hammered the Park brake and said my prayers. I was coming up on a 4 lane highway quick.

She slowed down but not enough, I could already see that I wouldn't stop until I was across the first 2 lanes. I wound up slipping into the ditch just off the shoulder to shut it down.

Now? I have AAA on anything I own. Safety issue? Park that sombitch and use a finger..

Oh, let's see here...

1997 Ford Escort, grenading the 3-4 gear clutch in the trans at 70mph on the Interstate. Tires locked up for a 1/4 second, BANG, and now coasting along. Trans would only engage 1st or 2nd gear, limiting the car to 50mph.

1976 Delta 88, blew out a front tire at 70mph. Like, chunks of rubber all over.

1976 Delta 88, the muffler and 4 feet of exhaust pipe broke off on the Interstate.

1976 Delta 88, started the car after winter storage and it was shooting dead mice out of the exhaust pipe. They made little thuds when they hit the back of the garage. The bodies were smoking.

1994 Dodge Shadow, timing belt failure.

1997 Ford Escort, dropped valve seat. Drove to store just fine. Shut it off, went inside, came back out 10 min. later. In that time, it had dropped the seat in the parking lot. Start the car and greeted with mechanical destruction.

A few years ago we were on a road trip looking at schools when our Grand Caravan (one of the jelly bean ones) decided that transmission fluid for chumps. Dumped it all out at 70mph on the highway. There was a massive CLUNK followed by the worst grinding noise anyone has ever heard. We limped it down the next exit ramp and stopped at a gas station which thank god sold ATF. We filled it back up and surprisingly it was fine for the 200 mile ride home.

Pinion bearing failed on the freeway in my Scout. Rear end locked up. That was kinda scary.

Had both of these happen to me. The loud pop could of been a misfire or unburnt gas igniting. Happens on my Skyline because it's running rich right now.

That happened on this very same car I posted.

Was having electrical issues and power brakes and power steering would fail in highway speed traffic. Car would also shut off too.

I don't think it was engine related. Sounded like it came from the inside.

Once when I was much younger, my dad was driving us home in the old Lumina we had. He was driving, I was in the passenger seat, and my sister behind me. Minding our own business, when suddenly I'm covered in glass and the side mirror is sitting in my lap. My dad looked in the mirror to see a deer stumbling off the road, it must have clipped the mirror and sent it flying. My dad had a small scratch but other than that no injuries.

Not a failure but a a deer hit - it jumped out from behind oncoming traffic going about 50mph. Hit my grill and windshield. I got truck stopped, (all crossed up half in the ditch.) The damn deer comes to it's senses, gets up and scrambles off up the hillside... Drove that little hardbody Nissan 5 miles to my future in-laws house, windshield blown out and sh*t leaking from everywhere. Got it fixed and put another 80,000 miles on it before selling it.
